The Numbur Himal Cheese Circuit Trekking Trail is another choice for visitors seeking virgin trekking areas in Nepal. It is named in honor of Mt. Numburchuli (6959 m) and one of Nepal’s first yak cheese factories, established in 1957 AD. Unique tourism activities in this newly explored trail include soft- to adventurous eco-camping experiences, rock climbing, exploring high-altitude lakes, wilderness walks through the mountain forest, glacier walks, base camp treks, high pastures and yak cheese making, Sherpa cultural experiences, spiritual and meditation visits at the monastery, biodiversity and climate change study, and interaction with rural Sherpa people. The mountain views, including the Everest range, Numburchuli, Gaurishankar, Jugal, and Langtang Himal, are sensational, and the Panchpokhari pass (4605 m) and Gyajo La (Thulo Lapcha) pass at 4880 m are the most adventurous passes with views extending north into Tibet and south to P-Key and Tabe danda.
One of the biggest moments on the trail is Thodung, where Nepal’s oldest cheese factory sits; it was set up decades ago, and they’re still crafting traditional yak and cow cheese using methods that feel age-old. So, trekkers get that curious peek into the local dairy farming legacy, along with genuine, warm hospitality from community members who seem quietly proud of it all.
As the path climbs higher, sweeping vistas open up of Numbur Himal, Karyolung, Kongde, and other snow-covered summits, spanning the Everest and Rolwaling ranges. Along the way you’ll also notice calm monasteries, alpine meadows, and quiet mountain passes; it creates this slow, peaceful, immersive alpine feeling, away from crowded footpaths that always seem busy.
Overall, it’s moderately demanding, and most people finish it in about 10–14 days. The Numbur Himal Cheese Circuit is a great fit for trekkers who want a mix of culture, nature, and mountain scenery without that heavy stream of walkers you see on more commercial routes, basically a true off-the-beaten-path Himalayan escapade that still feels human and not overly staged.
