Jomsom Muktinath Trekking is another wonderful short-day trek in the territory of the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal. For Jomsom Muktinath trekking, you take a six-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The next morning of your arrival in Pokhara, you take a 25-minute flight to Jomsom. Jomsom is the gateway of Muktinath as well as Upper Mustang, the forbidden kingdom of Nepal. After a few moments of your arrival at Jomsom Airport, your trekking starts towards Kagbeni, the medieval-looking Tibetan village.
The Jomsom Muktinath Trekking Trail goes along the Kaligandaki River. You spend the night at the local lodge/hotel at Kagbeni. The next morning, you move up to Muktinath. Muktinath is the pilgrimage center of Hindus as well as Buddhists. In Muktinath, you see Tibetan traders and sadhus (holy men) from as far away as the south of India. Here you visit the Muktinath temple, shrines of different gods and goddesses, springs, and a natural gas spot. From Muktinath, you retrace your steps to Jomsom. And then again, catch a flight to Pokhara.
From here you can observe the panoramic view of Mt Annapurna 1st (8091), Mt Dhaulagiri (8167m), Mt Tilicho (7134m), Mt Thorong La (5415 m), and Mt Nilgiri (7061m). Another attraction of this trek is the culture and lifestyle of Thakali. Thakalis are an indigenous group living in the northwestern part of Nepal. They are originally from Thak Khola. The Marpha village is a salt trading route from Tibet to the western part of Nepal. On this Jomsom Muktinath trekking, you can observe multicultural people along the Kaligandaki River.
Jomsom Muktinath Trekking kind of ties in nicely with the Upper Mustang Trek too, because both routes use the same Kali Gandaki valley and the Mustang region too. So you can push your trip past Muktinath and step into that restricted Upper Mustang zone while wandering around Lo Manthang’s walled city, old monasteries, and those stark desert panoramas. Of course, it means you need a special permit, in addition to the usual ACAP and TIMS paperwork.
