The Langtang Helambu trekking is an easy-level trek. It makes a loop through the Sherpa-populated Helambu region, which is located to the north-east of Kathmandu. Helambu Circuit trekking starts from Sundarijal (a half-hour drive). From Sundarijal, you ascend to Chisopani, Gulbhanjyang, Mangengot, and Tharepati, Melamchi Village, and descend to Tarke Ghyang, Sarmathang, Timbu, Kakani, Talamarang an Melamchipul bazaar.
The Langtang Helambu trekking does not go beyond 3500 m/11480 ft from sea level. The route of this trek passes through forests and villages. If you trek in March and April, you find beautiful rhododendron blossoms in the forest. In Helambu, there are mixed-ethnic villages of Tamang and Sherpa. The local people are very friendly and hospitable. The total trekking days are six days. You end this trekking at Melamchi Bazaar. Your Langtang Helambu trekking ends at Melamchi. From there, you drive back to Kathmandu (around 5 hours).
Helambu kind of stands out as one of Nepal’s more reachable yet culturally full trekking areas, and it sits just north of Kathmandu. Compared with nearby Langtang, it’s home to the Hyolmo (Yolmo) people, and their distinct Tibetan Buddhist tradition really shows up in old monastery sites around spots like Tarke Ghyang and Sermathang. The route is also generally gentler in pace, with lower altitudes, so it ends up being a great fit for first-time trekkers, or for those shorter trips when you don’t want too much altitude. On the way, you’ll pass through amazing rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and those traditional stone villages, and people usually treat you with very warm hospitality. Helambu also links in a smooth way with the Langtang and Gosaikunda circuits, so if you want, you can stretch the whole journey and stitch together different landscapes, cultures, and that unforgettable high mountain scenery.
