The Gokyo Lakes trek gives an alternative to the traditional Everest base camp trek. The trek starts from Lukla after a half-hour mountain flight from Kathmandu, following the Dudh Koshi River towards Namche Bazaar, the gateway of the Khumbu region. After Namche, you branch off from the busy main trail towards the sleepy villages of Phortse Tenga, Dole, and Machhermo. The Machhermo village is situated at 4465 m/14645 ft. The town is partially sheltered from the wind by steep hillside spurs to the north and south and has a tremendous view of the rocky amphitheater that blocks the glen to the west. The lodge is basic but comfortable enough. Also, the community is building a porter shelter and a health post in the village
From Machhermo, the Gokyo Lakes trek view dramatically changes from broad pastures to narrow clefts with steeply climbing trails; an icy stream to cross stony wastes and the banks of turns; and the first lake of the trail continues way up to stone steps to the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, turquoise in color and reflecting the white face of Cho Oyu (8153 m/26741 ft) seen ahead, and finally, you reach your ultimate destination, Gokyo Lake (4750 m/15580 ft), where a few tea houses are available for overnight stays.
Gokyo Lakes trek highlights include climbing Gokyo Ri (5357 m/17571 ft). From there, you can observe great Himalayan views of Mt. Everest (8848 m/29029 ft) and three other 8000-meter peaks (Mt. Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu). From here, you can also see the largest glacier in Nepal, named Ngozumpa. Apart from them, the view of the tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang (7922 m/25984 ft) is one of the most dramatic panoramas of the Gokyo Lake Trek. From Gokyo Lake, there are many options for high-altitude walking, including the crossing of Cho La Pass and Rengo La Pass; however, you will not cross those passes. Rather, you return to Namche Bazaar and Lukla via the same previous route. This Gokyo Lake trek is indeed less crowded than the Everest Base Camp trek.
Is the Gokyo Lake Trek better than the Everest Base Camp Trek?
Both treks are absolutely stunning in their own unique way, and picking one really comes down to the sort of experience you want, like what kind of mood you’re chasing. Everest Base Camp Trek gives you that buzz of standing right at the feet of the world’s tallest giant, plus you walk along the same route as those famous climbers, and you feel the raw energy of Everest up close. The Gokyo Lake Trek, however, offers calmer turquoise waters, less bustle, and just as jaw-dropping mountain scenery, all in a quieter, more serene vibe. If you’re into dramatic iconic landmarks, then go for Everest Base Camp. If you’re after natural charm, stillness, and a more off-the-beaten-path journey, the Gokyo Lake Trek will win you over completely.
How many Gokyo Lakes are there?
There are, officially, six Gokyo Lakes tucked in really nicely in the Khumbu area of Nepal, and yeah, all of them sit above 4,700 meters. Each one kind of has its own vibe, like that striking turquoise shade, plus this surrounding wall of mountain views that feels incredible. The most popular, and honestly the one that people talk about the most, is the third lake; it’s right by Gokyo village, where most trekkers end up sleeping overnight. The fourth and fifth ones need a bit of extra time, like another half-day side journey, but they pay you back with even more faraway, unspoiled natural beauty. And the sixth lake. It’s the farthest out and rarely seen, so it ends up feeling like a true little hidden gem for folks who want to wander past the usual pathway, a bit off the beaten track.
Is Gokyo Ri better than Kala Patthar?
You get spectacular mountain panoramas around the planet, yet they do this in such a different way each time, you know? Like Kala Patthar, at 5,555 meters, it gives the closest and, honestly, the most face-to-face dramatic look at Mount Everest, so for anyone whose main focus is seeing the world’s highest peak right up close, it feels like the ultimate stop. Then there’s Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters, which opens into a much wider and more varied landscape. From there you can catch four of the world’s six highest mountains—Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu—sitting in one scene, just above the shimmering Gokyo Lakes, with the big Ngozumpa Glacier stretching under everything. A lot of experienced trekkers seem to think Gokyo Ri is the prettier and more rewarding viewpoint of the pair, even if Kala Patthar looks so direct.
