Tour Overview

Tour Overview

The Nagarkot sunrise tour is one of the best places that offer great mountain views near the Kathmandu Valley. Nagarkot is a resort village, 32 km east of Kathmandu. The elevation of this beautiful place is 2,175m above sea level. The views go from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east. On a clear day, one can see Mt. Everest (8848m), Manaslu (8,463m), Ganesh Himal (7,111m), and Langtang (7,246m). Many people go up to Nagarkot in the afternoon, stay in a hotel in Nagarkot, and then get up at dawn to see the Himalaya Mountains during the sunrise.

Nagarkot sunrise tour: Here you find lots of hotels and resorts from standard to deluxe categories. There is a lookout tower south of the village from where you can get a 360º view of the scenery. It is an easy one-hour walk from the main hotel area. There are some pleasant walks around Nagarkot. Some good walks are down to Sankhu, Sundarijal, Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur, or Banepa. Now Nagarkot is becoming popular as a destination for a short escape from city life. Trekkers after a long trek prefer to stay in Nagarkot for relaxation. Similarly, other Nepal travelers would stay overnight in Nagarkot for mountain views and sunrise.

 Nagarkot Sunrise Tour from Kathmandu

Nagarkot is only 32 km east of Kathmandu, so it ends up being the easiest Himalayan viewpoint from the capital, like really close in practice. Most sunrise tours leave Kathmandu around 3:30–4:00 AM, and they go winding uphill, past Bhaktapur and through thick pine forests, before you finally reach Nagarkot’s ridge, usually at about 2,175 m elevation. The whole drive takes roughly 1.5 hours, though it feels longer when you’re looking out the window. Typical tour packages come with hotel pickup, plus a guide and sometimes a quick pause at Bhaktapur Durbar Square on the way back. If you’d rather not deal with that early-morning rush, you can also stay overnight at one of Nagarkot’s ridge-top hotels; it’s a far more unhurried way to catch the dawn light, gently and without the schedule pressure.

 Best Sunrise Viewpoints in Nagarkot

The best spot is probably the Nagarkot Geodetic Survey Tower—like, it’s the highest point up on the ridge at about 2,195 m. From that height, you get an unobstructed, sort of 180-degree view across the Himalayan horizon, starting from Annapurna on the west and running all the way to the Everest range on the east. If you want something more atmospheric, the open terraces and even the rooftops of ridgeline hotels such as Club Himalaya or Fort Resort can feel just as impressive, with the added comfort of holding a hot drink in your hand. Serious photographers usually walk 10–15 minutes east of the tower, along the ridge trail; there, the foreground ridges and rhododendron slopes create a more natural frame for the photo.

Nagarkot Sunrise Time Today (May 29, 2026)

Today in Nagarkot, the sun comes up at 5:51 AM local time, and well, it does. Civil twilight, the moment the sky starts glowing and mountains start showing up clearly, begins a bit earlier, around 5:27 AM. In late May, the days are long; sunset lands at 6:21 PM, so you get close to 12 hours and 29 minutes of daylight. If you’re planning to climb for sunrise, try to be at your spot by 5:20 AM, so you catch that full pre-dawn alpenglow spilling across the peaks before the sun actually clears the horizon line. Clear mornings can still happen in late May, but monsoon season is creeping in, so do check the weather forecast the night before.

Can You See Everest from Nagarkot?

Yes, but also with an honest caveat. Everest (8,848 m) can be seen from Nagarkot, yet spotting it among the many peaks takes a map or a local guide who can point it out in a precise way. It looks like a tiny distant summit, just peeking over the Rolwaling ridgeline, and honestly, it feels far less dramatic than the nearer Ganesh Himal or the Langtang ranges that really dominate the skyline. If the day is truly clear, Everest is usually easiest to catch from the View Tower at Nagarkot’s highest spot, though even then clouds will often get in the way. In practice, October through early December tends to bring the most consistently clear conditions for a solid sighting. Just don’t go only for Everest; go for the wide-sweeping panorama it belongs to.

Scenic drive to the country side, you know, depart Kathmandu at 4:00 AM then wind through Bhaktapur’s ancient streets, heading toward Nagarkot’s misty ridge.

Sunrise and mountain views, ok so you should Arrive Nagarkot about 5:20 AM and just watch that golden alpenglow slowly paint Everest plus the Himalayas peaks as morning starts, it feels unreal.

Hiking, Trekking the Nagarkot ridge trail through pine forest, you’ll pass local village scenes, with sweeping valley views bellow. It feels calm, and a bit strange in the best way, like you’re on a quiet pilgrimage, even if you just came for a hike.

Changu Narayan Temple,Drop down from Nagarkot, to Nepal’s oldest Vishnu temple, just wander about the UNESCO stone reliefs that go back centuries, kinda.
