Everest base camp trek – Difficulty

The Everest base camp trek is difficult because of the altitude. The trek starts from Lukla 2880 m which is 35 minute’s flight from Kathmandu. The high altitude sickness starts from Lukla and trails gradually up to the base camp(5364 m) and Kala patter(5555 m). However, aim for patients and longer periods of activity over speedy, high-intensive exercise the slow and balanced walk is giving your body more time to adjust to the altitude changes and sensible pacing to avoid exhausting yourself.

The Everest base camp trek has the spirit of a mountain journey and like walking, you are always qualified for any trekking in Nepal. You do not need any previous experience. However, we suggest you some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, and hiking before you embark on the journey to the Everest base camp trek.

Day Excursion to Everest Base Camp

The Gorakshep is the last settlement before the Everest base camp. From here 3-hour high altitude walk but depending on each individual’s weather, acclimatization, and physical conditioning. The south Mt. Everest Base Camp is in Nepal at an altitude of 5,364 m (17,598 ft). The Everest Base Camp trek on the south side is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is visited by thousands of trekkers each year. Enjoy the view of the Khumbu glacier and the foot of the world’s highest mountain. Everest base camp is a flat field below Kala Patthar, 5,545 m (18,192 ft), and Mt. Pumori.

EBC AMS & Prevention

When you will go over 3000 m they may feel some effects of altitude sickness like shortness of breath and possibly light-headedness which is fairly common. Sometimes they may also get diarrhea as well as sprains and muscle aches. In such a case, our guide who is experienced in first aid treatment and high altitude sickness will advise you about any health requirements and also treat you. Altitude sickness is dangerous but it can be avoidable. If you follow a few simple rules you will not suffer from altitude sickness. Rules are to trek slowly with your guide, drink at least two liters of water per day (not including beer or soft drinks),

If you feel shortness of breath, a slight headache, or dizziness, tell your guide and rest immediately. Lie down, and drink water. If you are still feeling unwell you may consider going down a few hundred meters. Do not pretend you are okay and do not go down alone. For further information on altitude sickness.

In a normal tea house you can charge a restaurant, the charging place is fixed by the tea house owner. But for the deluxe mountain lodge, you can charge in your room.

The WI–Fi is available in Everest trekking in Mountain Lodge. The Everest Link WI–Fi company will provide you WI–Fi card, Nepali rupees 500 to 1000 ($5 to $10).

A lot of the tea houses have power strips with American outlets. If not then either a C or D type outlet is good. If your device is 230 volts or is dual voltage and the plug can fit in a Nepali power outlet then you can use it in Nepal. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100 V - 127 V (as is in the US, Canada, and most South American countries), you need a voltage converter in Nepal. You can check out all the details on the different outlets. If you have time in Kathmandu you can buy at least the common adapters for just a couple of dollars. For your kind information, you can bring your comfortable hand-carry suitcase/duffel bag / any according to your interest. If you don’t have a duffel bag for trekking we will provide you to carry your trekking gear.

Most of the tea houses have western-style flush toilets and cold running water. In almost all cases the bathrooms are shared and not attached to the individual rooms. Some of the higher-elevation tea houses have Asian style toilets which consist of a ceramic basin on the ground

Most of the time you can use the bathrooms in one of the tea houses or lodges, but if it's urgent you can go off the trail and find some privacy.

This is a good idea. However, you can also easily buy a roll along the trail at one of the small shops. At higher elevations like Gorakhashep, a roll of tissue might run you $2 to $4.

The lower-elevation tea houses have hot showers (generally gas) whereas the higher-elevation tea houses generally provide a bucket of hot water. Tea Houses generally charge an extra $3 to $5 for a hot shower which can be well worth it after a long day on the trail.

Comfortable, sturdy trekking shoes or boots are a must. Look for shoes with ankle support, and ideally your footwear will have Gore-Tex or similar lining, along with thick soles. This will ensure that your feet stay warm and dry and that you are comfortable walking on rocky paths. It’s always best to break your boots in before you arrive and make sure they are comfortable. If you start to get a blister it’s best to stop immediately and cover it with duct tape or moleskin

The flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are generally reliable but if the weather is not good they can be canceled for the entire day. Our 14-day package includes one buffer day in case of delays but we suggest that you schedule a couple of extra additional days in case of delays at the end of your trek. If your flight is delayed in Kathmandu we will rebook your flight for the next day. We may also be able to provide an option for a privately chartered helicopter. If you choose to take the helicopter this can cost an additional $500 or more depending on availability and group size. Extra hotel nights ($40) and meals in Kathmandu are not included when flights are delayed although we will make arrangements for you. If your flight is delayed from Lukla you are responsible for extra accommodation and meals (approximately $30). (Flying to Lukla – What You Need to Know).

It’s sometimes the case that trekkers finish ahead of schedule or end up stopping the trek early for health or personal reasons. If this is the case please understand that we do not offer any refunds for unused days on the trek. Please understand that our costs are the same as we must pay our guides and porters for the time they have committed.

We take all possible precautions to proactively ensure the safety and wellness of our trekkers, but rest assured that our guides are trained and experienced in dealing with emergencies. If necessary, your guide will utilize your travel insurance information to call a rescue helicopter, and you will be flown to Kathmandu for medical attention.

Having minor symptoms of altitude sickness such as a headache are quite common and you can continue trekking. However, if you develop additional symptoms you mustn’t continue trekking to a higher elevation. We can often arrange to have you walk down to a lower elevation and wait several days for the symptoms to resolve before continuing with the next group. Note that additional charges apply for extra days on the trek.

If you are sick and need to rest for a day we can often place you in the next trekking group coming up the mountain. We would rather see trekkers take extra time on the trail than risk altitude sickness by pushing themselves too fast. Please talk to your guide about this and we will do our best to accommodate you. Note, that extra charges will apply for additional days on the trek. Please see complete details in our "Terms of Service".
