Tengboche monastery also known as Dawa Choling Gompa is one of the icons from Everest region which introduces higher Khumbu valley with an entire world. This holy place is one of the largest monasteries in Everest region which is situated on the top of the hill in front of beautiful mountain Amadablam and besides over the confluence of Dudhkoshi and Imja Khola which is located en route to Everest base camp. This monastery is regarded as Mecca for Sherpa from high Khumbu valley and they have big respect and honor for this heritage. This highland monastery is located at the elevation of 3867m/12683ft where around 55 monks live here permanently. This monastery practices Tibetan Buddhism whereas the local people in this region also follows Tibetan Buddhism.
Tengboche Monastery was built by Lama Gulu in 1916 is blessed by a surreal view of beautiful mountains. To reach this place we have few options that we can fly to Lukla 2800m and walk 34km uphill above or take a helicopter. For those who want to escape adventure walk but acclimatization is highly recommended before you head to this place. This holy land is surrounded by forest containing Rhododendron, Juniper and Fir trees which adds extra texture and beauty. This monastery got the miserable tragedy that it was collapsed by an earthquake in 1934 which was rebuilt later. And again it got another mishap in 1989 damaged by fire and then it was built later. During the earthquake of 2015, it was partially damaged which was restored later.
Tengboche monastery is famous for Mani Rimdu festival which falls in the month of October/November. People from Khumbu region gather together to see monk dance in front of Mandala inside the monastery which lasts for few days. A big bonfire is made in the courtyard which is fueled with yak butter and homemade liquor which aims to pull away from the bad spirits.
This beautiful monastery is a precious gift from God that exists in paradise on your visit to Everest panoramic trekking. The view we can see from here is truly amazing. We can see few world-renowned mountains including Mt Everest, Lhotse, Amadablam etc. Mt Amadablam is known as the mother of the jewel is located just in front making this place so amazing. Many people claim that this is the most beautiful mountain in Everest region.
